Standing Firm in Hope

Noah Wall, now a vibrant and intelligent nine-year-old, did not always start life on such a joyful note. His parents, Shelly and Rob, were initially filled with excitement as they anticipated the arrival of their baby. However, their joy turned to heartbreak when a routine ultrasound revealed shocking news: their unborn child had no brain and was suffering from spina bifida, a severe spinal cord defect. Compounding their distress, Noah also had hydrocephalus, a condition causing excess fluid to build up on his brain.

Shelly and Rob, devout Christians, openly attribute their strength to their faith. They have shared how prayer and trust in God became their anchors in the storm. Confronted with a grim prognosis and repeatedly urged to consider terminating the pregnancy, Shelly and Rob faced an agonizing decision. Medical professionals painted a bleak picture of Noah’s future, emphasizing the improbability of a meaningful life.

Yet, despite the crushing odds and the relentless pressure to surrender, Shelly and Rob chose hope. They refused to allow their son’s condition to determine his destiny. Armed with unwavering faith, they committed to giving Noah a chance at life. Their journey was fraught with challenges, as they navigated through numerous medical procedures and intensive care. Living out the truth of Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” they persevered against all expectations.

Their faith and determination were rewarded in remarkable ways. As of the writing of this book, Noah has defied the odds, developing more than 80% of his brain and continuing to grow and thrive. He is a curious and joyful boy with a passion for learning about airplanes and space.

Noah’s story stands as a testament to the power of faith, love, and perseverance. Shelly and Rob’s refusal to accept defeat transformed not only Noah’s life but also challenged medical perspectives on brain function and the potential for children with severe conditions.

In our spiritual battles, we often face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Yet, Noah’s journey illustrates that with steadfast faith and perseverance, miraculous outcomes are possible. The Bible encourages us to remain resolute and trust in God’s strength. Isaiah 40:31 promises, “But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.” Just as Shelly and Rob fought for their son’s future, we are called to persist in faith and prayer, trusting that God will guide us through our challenges and fulfill His purposes in our lives.

Like Noah, a small contingent of British soldiers faced a formidable challenge in January 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu War, at Rorke’s Drift, a remote outpost in South Africa. This mission station, with a garrison of roughly 150 men, found itself besieged by a massive Zulu force of about 3,000 to 4,000 warriors. Despite being dramatically outnumbered, the British soldiers displayed extraordinary valor and resolve.

The Zulus, renowned for their combat skills, launched a series of intense attacks on the outpost. The British defenders, though exhausted and heavily outnumbered, held their position with unwavering determination. They quickly fortified their defenses using available resources, such as biscuit crates, to create barricades. Their disciplined defense and resolute courage repelled successive waves of Zulu assaults.

Throughout the night, the battle was fierce, with the British forces enduring relentless pressure. Despite the overwhelming odds and continuous attempts to breach their defenses, the soldiers stood their ground. At dawn, the Zulu forces, having incurred heavy casualties and unable to break through, eventually withdrew.

The remarkable stand at Rorke’s Drift is celebrated as a prime example of heroism and perseverance. The defenders’ ability to withstand a much larger force resulted in only 17 British deaths and 15 wounded, while the Zulu losses were significantly higher. The bravery of the garrison was recognized with numerous military honors, including 11 Victoria Crosses, the highest British military award.

The courage displayed at Rorke’s Drift serves as a powerful metaphor for spiritual warfare. Just as the British soldiers faced overwhelming odds with steadfast resolve, believers are called to stand firm in their faith when confronted with seemingly insurmountable challenges. This story emphasizes the importance of trusting in God’s strength and remaining resolute, even when the situation appears hopeless.

In spiritual battles, believers might feel surrounded by difficulties, much like Noah’s parents and the defenders at Rorke’s Drift. Yet, relying on God’s promises and strength can provide the courage needed to persevere. The Bible encourages us to remain strong and trust in God’s power: Ephesians 6:10 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.” Just as the soldiers at Rorke’s Drift did not surrender, believers are called to persist in faith and prayer. These stories serve as a reminder that courage and reliance on divine strength can overcome the most formidable obstacles.

King David relied on Divine strength, recognizing that his battles were not just physical but also spiritual. Each confrontation began with a profound seeking of God’s guidance. When David faced the Amalekites after they had attacked Ziklag, he did not rush into action based on mere impulse. Instead, he inquired of the Lord, as recorded in

1 Samuel 30:8: “David inquired of Yahweh, saying, ‘Shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them?’ He answered him, ‘Pursue; for you shall surely overtake them, and you shall without fail recover all.’” This divine direction was crucial for David’s victory, highlighting the importance of seeking God’s counsel in every battle.

Discernment is similarly vital in spiritual warfare today. The challenges we face require not only physical strength but also spiritual insight. C.T. Studd, a renowned missionary, exemplified this principle throughout his ministry in Africa and China. His life was marked by significant spiritual opposition and the constant need for discernment.

One notable story highlights Studd’s discernment. During his mission in China, he encountered a situation that tested his understanding of God’s guidance. Studd faced strong resistance from local authorities and spiritual adversaries who sought to undermine his work. At one point, he was warned of a potential trap set to discredit him and hinder his mission. In response, Studd sought God’s wisdom through prayer, asking for clear guidance.

Through prayer and discernment, Studd recognized the need to alter his strategy. Instead of confronting the adversaries head-on, he chose to focus on building relationships and strengthening local believers. This strategic shift not only safeguarded his mission but also allowed for a more profound impact on the community. His ability to discern God’s direction in the face of adversity was a testament to the importance of seeking divine insight in all matters.

Studd’s approach reflects the truth found in James 1:5, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.” Just as David relied on God for guidance in battle, and C.T. Studd sought divine wisdom in his mission, we too must seek God’s direction. Our battles, whether personal or spiritual, demand the same level of discernment that these faithful men demonstrated.

In every challenge, be it in the battlefield of life or in spiritual endeavors, seek God’s guidance with earnest prayer. Trust in His wisdom, as Proverbs 3:5-6 assures us: “Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.” Embrace the lessons from David and C.T. Studd, and let their examples inspire you to seek divine discernment in your own journey.

Cultivating a habit of seeking God’s guidance before making decisions can profoundly transform your life, especially when you’re navigating confusion or conflict.
