Starving the Enemy: Why satan Has No Power Without Us

From the beginning of time, the greatest deception satan has ever spun is the illusion of power. He is presented as a dark ruler, as if he were the rival to YHWH, a force to be feared, an equal and opposite to the Almighty. Hollywood dramatizes him as nearly omnipotent, pulpits often tremble at his name more than they magnify the name of Yeshua, and even believers sometimes speak of him as though he has unlimited authority over the earth. But the Word of YHWH tears this lie to shreds. satan is not powerful. He has no ability to create, no authority that is truly his, no life within him. He is not eternal. He is not omnipresent. He is not omniscient. He is a created being who fell through pride, stripped of authority at the cross, and left as nothing more than a parasite who feeds on the rebellion of mankind.

The words of Yeshua Himself expose satan’s true nature. In John 8:44, Yeshua says, “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” Notice what Yeshua does not say. He does not describe satan as strong, or unstoppable, or creative. He names him as a liar. His only ability is to twist, deceive, manipulate, and corrupt what YHWH has already made good. He fathers lies, because lies are all he has.

This truth was nailed into history at Calvary. Colossians 2:15 declares that Yeshua “disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” The Greek word used for “disarmed,” apekdyomai, literally means to strip away, to remove like a garment. Yeshua did not compromise with the devil. He did not merely weaken him. He stripped him bare in the sight of all creation, exposing his fraudulence once and for all. The prophecy of Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled: the serpent bruised the heel of Messiah, but the head of the serpent was crushed. satan’s claim of dominion was revoked in blood.

And yet, if that is true, why does it still appear that his kingdom operates? Why do we still see oppression, addiction, corruption, and torment across the world? If satan was disarmed, why does he still wreak havoc? The answer is simple and sobering: he only operates on borrowed ground. Paul warns in Ephesians 4:27, “nor give place to the devil.” The Greek word for “place” is topos, the same word used for a plot of land or legal territory. In other words, satan cannot simply take ground. He must be given ground. He does not break into locked doors. He waits for humanity to open them.

This is the pattern from the beginning. In Genesis 3, satan did not overpower Adam and Eve. He did not wrestle them into submission. He whispered. He questioned. “Has Elohim indeed said…?” He planted doubt. He offered a counterfeit promise: “You will be like Elohim.” And when they believed his lie and acted on it, they handed him authority. He did not take it; it was given to him. The same is true today. satan does not barge into lives uninvited. He survives by agreement, by the ground humans willingly yield to him.

What, then, is the fuel of his counterfeit kingdom? It is the sin and rebellion of mankind. satan feeds on fear, on pride, on unforgiveness, on lust, on idolatry. He thrives where lies are believed. He is empowered where compromise is tolerated. Fear is one of his most common meals, for fear is faith inverted. Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7 that Elohim has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. The word translated “fear” is deilia, meaning timidity, dread, cowardice. Fear is not neutral; it is spiritual agreement with torment. First John 4:18 says, “Perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.” Where fear is present, tormentors have a right to enter. Fear feeds them.

Rebellion nourishes him in the same way. First Samuel 15:23 declares that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft. The Hebrew word meri means defiance, resistance against authority. Witchcraft seeks to manipulate, control, and operate outside of YHWH’s order. Rebellion does the same, and satan drinks it like water because it mirrors his own downfall. In Isaiah 14, his heart declared, “I will ascend. I will exalt. I will be like the Most High.” Every act of rebellion echoes his own pride, feeding him the very substance that corrupted his beauty and dragged him into Sheol.

Unforgiveness is another open door that keeps him well-fed. Yeshua warns in Matthew 18 that the servant who refused to forgive was delivered to the tormentors until he paid all. The word “tormentors,” basanistēs, refers to torturers, jailers, executioners of judgment. When we cling to bitterness and refuse to forgive, we invite torment into our lives. satan feeds on grudges. He thrives in bitterness. He gorges himself on offense because it binds people to chains they refuse to release.

Lust is yet another banquet at his table. The Greek word epithumia, used in 1 John 2:16, means an over-desire, a distorted craving. Lust hijacks the beauty of covenant intimacy and twists it into appetite. Pornography, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, perversion of every kind these are not neutral struggles; they are feeding troughs for demons. satan cannot create love, so he counterfeits it through lust and enslaves souls in addiction. Paul warns in Romans 6:16, “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slave whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” Lust feeds the enemy with slavery.

And pride remains his delicacy. Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. The Hebrew ga’own means arrogance, swelling, haughtiness. It was pride that lifted satan’s heart in Ezekiel 28:17: “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.” Pride blinds the eyes to truth. Pride hardens the heart against repentance. Pride resists deliverance. And in every proud heart, satan finds a mirror of himself.

We could name greed, idolatry, deception, compromise all of them are fuel. satan cannot create, so he corrupts. He cannot generate life, so he drains it. He cannot originate truth, so he twists it. He is a scavenger spirit, clinging to whatever he can steal, and mankind continually feeds him by bowing to sin.

But the Word of YHWH does not leave us powerless. Yeshua gave His people authority. In Luke 10:19 He declares, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” The contrast in the Greek is critical. Authority (exousia) is the legal right to command the jurisdiction of a ruler. Power (dunamis) is raw strength or force. satan may still possess raw force, but Yeshua gave us authority that outranks it. Authority always overrules power. A policeman does not need the strength to stop a truck; his badge gives him the right to stop it. Likewise, the weakest saint walking in obedience carries more authority than the most violent demon.

James 4:7 lays down the pattern: “Therefore submit to Elohim. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Submission comes first, resistance second. satan does not flee because we shout louder or pray longer; he flees because we are submitted to the One who already triumphed over him. Without submission, resistance is powerless. With submission, resistance is victorious.

So the strategy is clear: starve him. If satan is a parasite, then his kingdom collapses the moment the host cuts him off. Refuse to feed him. Refuse to hand him the ground. Repent of sin. Forgive quickly. Walk humbly. Reject lust. Cast off fear. Tear down idols. Refuse compromise. Feed your spirit, not your flesh. Paul wrote in Romans 13:14, “But put on the Lord Yeshua Messiah, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” Provision means food. When the flesh is fed, satan eats. When the flesh is starved, he starves with it. And Yeshua told His disciples in Matthew 17:21, “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Fasting not only humbles the flesh but literally starves the demonic footholds that demand to be fed. Prayer and fasting together deny satan his substance and magnify YHWH’s power in us.

This is why renunciation is so powerful. Words matter. Proverbs 18:21 says death and life are in the power of the tongue. satan’s footholds often exist through agreements, vows, curses, and words spoken in sin. Renunciation cancels them. Speaking truth out loud strips him of his false claim. It shuts the door. It starves the parasite.

A believer’s prayer might sound like this: “Father YHWH, I come before You in the name of Yeshua. I confess that I have opened doors through sin, fear, rebellion, and unbelief. I repent and I turn from these ways. I renounce every lie of the enemy that I have believed. I cancel every agreement I made with darkness, knowingly or unknowingly. I declare that satan has no legal right to me, for I am bought with the blood of Yeshua. I shut every door by the authority of Luke 10:19. I submit fully to You, YHWH, and I resist the devil. He must flee from me now. I declare freedom, deliverance, and victory in the name of Yeshua Messiah. Amen.”

The truth is that satan is not strong; he is desperate. He prowls like a lion, but his roar has no bite unless we feed him. He survives only on what we surrender. He thrives only on what we hand him. He pretends to be a ruler, but he is only a liar with borrowed ground. Revelation 12:11 paints the final picture of his downfall: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” The blood silences his accusations. The testimony starves his lies. The surrender of the saints shuts the doors he longs to enter.

This is the call to the remnant: stop feeding the parasite. Refuse him every morsel. Close every door. Live in holiness. Walk in truth. Obey the Word. Stand in the authority of Yeshua. Starve the enemy, feed the Spirit, and watch his counterfeit kingdom collapse into the dust where it belongs.
